Gordon Alfred Hawkes was born on 8th Oct 1906 in Burnham in Crouch, Essex and was a draper before WW1. He landed in France on 13th Aug 1914 with the 1st Kings Royal Rifle Company as a rifleman. He would have taken part in the Battle of Mons and the subsequent retreat, including the the Affair of Landrecies, the Rearguard affair of Le Grand Fayt and the Rearguard actions of Villers-Cotterets, the Battle of the Marne and finally the Battle of the Aisne.
On the 14th Sep 1914 Gordon was killed in action trying to drive the enemy out of La Burette Woods near Verneuil, with the Irish Guards. It appears they were not only shelled by the enemy but by their own guns. Gordon has no known grave and is remembered on a memorial.
