      1914/15 Star named 2 LIEUT H C HAMMERSLEY S GDS & British War Medal named CAPT H C HAMMERSLEY.

      Hugh Charles Hammersley born 23rd Feb 1892 to Arthur & Mary Louisa (nee Campbell) Hammersley, an Army Agent & Banker living in Chelsea, London and having 11 servants in the 1901 census. He was educated at Eton College and joined the Scots Guards.

      He landed in France on 14th Jan 1915 as a 2nd Lt with the 1st Scots Guards and was mentioned in dispatches on 1st Jan 1916. On 11th April 1916 sent back to the UK with measles. When he was recovered he was sent as an assistant instructor with the bombing and trench mortar school in France. On the 26th Nov 1917 while instructing, a soldier dropped a live bomb, which was picked up and thrown to the rear where it exploded, with a bit of shrapnel catching him in the face. He ceased to work there on 26th Mar 1918 but survived the war.

      In 1939 he was a famer in Sevenoaks, Kent living with his sisters - see Doris Hammersley.
