1914/15 Star named 12371 PTE D ALDERTHAY W YORK R.
David Alderthay born in Smethwick, Birmingham in 1894 was working as a Labourer dressing fish plated in Middlesborough when he enlisted into the Prince of Wales Own West Yorkshire Regt numbered 12371. He landed in France on 19th Mar 1915, on the first day of the Somme 1st Jul 1916, the 2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Part of the 23rd Division) saw heavy combat as they advanced from just north of the Albert Road to attack German positions west of Ovilliers-la-Boisselle. The battalion suffered devastating casualties in the resulting in heavy casualties, David was killed in action on this day.
