      Description:

      1914/15 Star named 2566 CPL W C ALLPORT MANCH R, British War & Victory Medals named 2 LIEUT W C ALLPORT. Please note his MIC confirms an award of a Military Medal but we have not been able to find a London Gazette entry.

      William Charles Allport of 137 Oswald Road, Chorlton, Manchester was in the Manchesters TA numbered 2566 when he enlisted for the War on 24th Sept 1914. He was born on 30th Aug 1890 in Manchester and was a Commercial Traveller. After training he landed in Gallipoli with D Coy 1/7th Battalion on 18th Aug 1915. He was soon promoted to Cpl Sept 1915, L/Sgt Oct 1915, Serg Oct 1915, A/CQMS Mar 1916 and finally CQMS Sept 1916 by then they were in Egypt and Palestine. Allotated a new number of 275010 he stayed there till 2nd March 1917 when he was shipped to France arriving on 3rd March 1917 till 27th April 1917 he was sent back to the UK to become an Officer..

      May 1917 attached to 13th Battalion and then discharged to a commission in the 2/7th Manchester Regt on 30th Oct 1917. He was in France attached to the 5th Battalion on 30th March 1918 when he was reported Wounded in Action Gun Shot Wound to Left Arm and fractured bone. He is noted in the 2/7th Battalion as being sent to hospital on that day.

      He was made a Lt on 1st May 1920.
