John Hayden Kelly born on 29th May 1895 in Moss Side, Manchester, educated at St Bedes College and was a 19 year bank clerk when he enlisted into the Royal Field Artillery on 1st Sept 1914 numbered 1478. He was made a Driver in the 2nd East Lancashire Brigade (Manchester Artillery) RFA and landed in Egypt with them on 17th May 1915.
He did not start well as 27th Oct 1915 he was Court Martialled for disobeying a commanding officer and received 14 days field punishment. He had a few spells in hospital for boils which went Septic. He landed in France on the 12th March 1917 with the ammunition column and attached to 42nd Divisional Ammunition Column (DAC).
On 23rd May 1917 he was sent back to the UK for a commission and was commissioned on 6th Jan 1918 as a 2nd Lt. He landed back in France on 28th March 1918 and was with the 56th DAC. He was shipped back to the UK in Jan 1919 for demob.
