1914/15 Star named LIEUT N HOOLE W YORK R, British War & Victory Medals named LIEUT N HOOLE.
Norman was made a Temp 2nd LG 6th Oct 1914 and then put in the West Yorkshire Regt LG 1st Feb 1915 and he landed with the 12th West Yorkshire Regt in France in 1915 (his MIC states 1/4/1917 which is wrong and probably is 1915). Next we note him being mentioned as getting engaged in Yorkshire Post & Leeds Intelligence 19th April 1915 and being wed in Yorkshire Post 11th June 1915 with photo of him in uniform with wife. Norman Hoole Lt 12th West Yorkshire Regiment, youngest son of the late Arthur Hoole (well known horse breeder - Widson Stud) of Bickerton Grange, Wetherby, Yorkshire and Elsie, only daughter of Mrs Frank Greenwood of Ripon Road, Harrogate.
He is noted in medical notes as being in hospital London in Sept 1915 suffering shock and gas on 29th Sept 1915. This is confirmed by Harrogate Herald dated 13th OCt 1915 gassed at Battle of Loos, his brother-in-law Lt Greenwood was also wounded in action on 25th Sept 1915.
On 1st Sept 1916 made a Lt LG 13th Nov 1916, LG 21st Mar 1917 transferred to Labour Battalions West Riding Regt and then was probably sent to France again on 1st April 1917 see MIC card, LG 30th July 1917 transferred to Labour Corps. He is next mentioned in dispatches LG 24th Dec 1917, next he is back with the West Yorks Regt as he is transferred to the Royal Air Force on 10th Sept 1918 and finished the war with them, before relinguishing his commission on 21st Mar 1919.
