Joseph Ward was a Seaman from St Johns, Dublin, Ireland when he enlisted into the Coldstream Guards on 7th Aug 1914 numbered 10846 and landed in France on 7th Oct 1914 with the 1st Battalion in D Coy. He was captured in the fighting on 29th Oct 1914 at the famous fighting at Ghulevelt, Ypres. He was stationed at the POW camp at Limburg Camp and because of his Irish roots may have been offered release if he fought with the Irish Brigade for the Germans. He was repatriated on 1st Nov 1918 due to sickness.
He reenlisted back into the Coldstream Guards on 7th Mar 1919 formerly as a Motor Driver lasted until 1st Oct 1922 when he was no longer fit for duty and he left for New York, USA with his wife.
