Benjamin Emmett born in 1841 in civil parish of Spotland St Clement in Rochdale, Lancashire enlisted into the 47th Regiment of Foot numbered 823 as a 21 year old labourer on 16th Dec 1862. After training he was sent to Canada to protect the interests of the empire from invasion by Irish Americans. He took part in the Fenian Raids of 1866 and was issued the Canada General Service Medal clasp Fenian Raid 1866. In 1869 he signed up for 21 years service and later transferred over to the 72nd Highlanders numbered 1863. He served in India and Afghanistan earning the Afghanistan Medal and 3 clasps. He is noted in the Chelsea Hospital records as receiving a pension.
