Frederick William Smith was born in Oxford in 1862 and had not yet reached his fifteenth birthday upon joining the 85th Foot as a Boy in October 1876. Made Bugler in July 1881, he was finally discharged as Colour-Sergeant in February 1899. With the outbreak of the Great War, he re-enlisted in October 1914 into the KSLI numbered 14773 and was discharged in April 1918. For his WW1 service he was awarded the Silver War Badge only.
