      Afghanistan Medal no clasp named 42/558 PTE F W SMITH 85TH FOOT, George V Meritorious Service Medal named CSJT F W SMITH KSLI & Victorian Long Service & Good Conduct Medal named 558 CR SGT F W SMITH SHROPS LI. Numbering on LS&GC just visible.

      MSM as per AO 122 of June 1933.


      Frederick William Smith was born in Oxford in 1862 and had not yet reached his fifteenth birthday upon joining the 85th Foot as a Boy in October 1876. Made Bugler in July 1881, he was finally discharged as Colour-Sergeant in February 1899. With the outbreak of the Great War, he re-enlisted in October 1914 into the KSLI numbered 14773 and was discharged in April 1918. For his WW1 service he was awarded the Silver War Badge only.
