Ashantee Medal no clasp named 1521 SERJT J MANSELL AHC 1873-4.
James Mansell born in Roscommon, Ireland in 1884 was a 19 year old Labourer when he enlisted into the 34th Regt of Foot numbered 907 on 17th Dec 1863. He stayed with them till 1st Dec 1864 when he transferred to the Army Hospital Corps numbered 1521. He did well becoming a Staff Sgt 1st Class in the now renamed Medical Service Corps. In 1873 he went to Africa and was awarded his Ashantee Medal, back home in 1874 and then to Egypt in 1882 and then home. He left the army in Jan 1885 after 21 years service and was awarded a LS&GC medal.
