John Saunders born 12th Nov 1840 in Fareham, Hampshire enlisted into the Royal Naval numbered 27936 as Boy 2nd Class on 10th Feb 1856. His first ship was Victory till 31st Mar 1857, HMS Hastings till 18th Aug 1857, HMS Ganges till 15th May 1861 as a Boy 1st Class, Ordinary Seaman and Able Seaman. HMS Excellent till 19th Jun 1862, HMS Black Prince till 18th May 1866, HMS Excellent again till 27th Aug 1867, HMS Lord Clyde till 12th Aug 1868, HMS Cambridge till 4th Sep 1868 and HMS Excellent again till 26th Sep 1869. HMS Warrior till 16th Oct 1871, HMS Voltage till 10th Oct 1872 by now Yeoman of the Store Rooms, HMS Duke of Wellington till 26th Mar 1873, HMS Argus till 9th June 1874 when he earned his Ashantee Medal. HMS Duke of Wellington again till 28th Sep 1874 and finally HMS Newcastle where he died in service on 5th Jan 1876.
