British War Medal named 2 LIEUT T B NESBIT.
Terence Beale Nesbit was born at Belfast on 8 August 1897 and educated at Royal Academy, Belfast, the Choir School of American Church, Paris and lastly Elstow School, Bedford. He enlisted at the outbreak of war in August 1914 as a Gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery numbered 87838 and was subsequently commissioned Second Lieutenant on 6 February 1915, The 3rd Dorset Regiment. He went overseas for the first time on 22nd Feb 1916 to Mesopotamia with them and fought at the Battle of Sanna-i-Yat on 21-22 Apr 1916 where he was severely wound in action. He was transported back onboard a steamer going to Basra but died from his wounds received on 24 April 1916. He is commemorated at the Basra Memorial.
His commanding officer wrote, 'He was well in front of his men and was gallantly leading them when he was hit. He was very popular with us all and is very greatly missed. He was hit soon after leaving the trenches but refused the offer of help from one of his men, leading his men to within 100 yards of the enemy trenches, where he fell, by which time 15 out of the 16 officers in the charge and nearly every man out of the trenches were put out of action.'
