British War Medal named CAPT R L PRATT.
Ralph Lewis Pratt born in Trevethin, Torfaen, Wales on 31st July 1875, son of Edwin Pratt JP owner of Pratts boot makers in Bristol. He was a member of the Aerial Rowing Club and a right half for the Clifton Football Club and played for the County as well.
He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt (City of Bristol) Gloucestershire Regt with the 2/4th battalion on 18th Aug 1914. After training they landed in France on 24th May 1916 with Ralph as a Capt and were moved to the front. On night of 4/5th July 1916 the regiment participated in a trench raid were Capt Hannam dec'c was awarded the VC and 2nd Lt Frederick Ridler an MC. On 19th July 1916 they were fighting in no-mans land with 7 officers and 155 other ranks casualties.
By Oct 1916 they were based in the trenches near Bout Ville after taking over from the 2/6th Gloucestershire Regt. On the night of 17th Oct 1916 an aerial torpedo landed in the trenches killing Ralph and wounding two other officers, one of whom died later. His official date of death is given as 18th Oct 1916 and he is buried at Pont du Hem military cemetery.
