British War Medal named 17884 PTE A E ELSTON DEVON R.
Albert Edward Elston born 1886 in St Pancras, London was a gas fitter when he enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment numbered 17884. After training he landed in France on 21st Dec 1915 with the 8th Battalion. On 26th Oct 1917 the battalion attacked the Germans at Gheluvent using a creeping artillery barrage, the attack failed because the pill boxes could not be rolled over and the enemy was in sufficient strength to counter attack. The battalion took 271 casualties, Albert was reported missing in action deemed killed in action later. He has known no grave and is remember on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
