British War Medal named S-40199 PTE T FITZGERALD R HIGHRS.
Thomas Fitzgerald born 1897 in Logiealmond, Perthshire, Son of John & Alice Fitzgerald of The Lodge, Kinnoull Hill, Perth. Thomas worked for the local bootmaker and enlisted into the Highland Cyclist Battalion and then to the Black Watch prior to leaving for France.
At the Battle of Flers, 25th September 1916 the battalion attacked a trench called Goose Alley with the New Zealanders. The enemy put up a lot of resistance and then counter attacked with bombs but they held on. The battalion lost 2 officers and 35 other ranks, 1 officer and 74 other ranks wouded and 7 missing. Sadly on this day Thomas was killed and his body was never found but he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
