Robert Carron was born at Plymouth, Devon, on 13 May 1827, and joined the Royal Navy on 12 Sep 1847. He served aboard HM Ships Acteon (Sep 1847 to Feb 1848) and Caledonia (Mar 1848 to Jun 1851) before joining Vengeance in Jul 1851. Whilst in this ship he served ashore in the Crimea with the Naval Brigade (Medal with 3 clasps sent to Excellent 19 Jan 1856). He was discharged from Vengeance to Pembroke in Apr 1855 and served aboard this ship in the Baltic during that year (Medal sent to Cambridge 26 May 1857). He next served aboard Edinburgh (Jun to Augt 1856) and Cambridge (Aug 1856 to Apr 1857), before joining Cordelia in Apr 1857. Whilst in this ship he served ashore with the Naval Brigade in New Zealand in 1860-61 in the Waitara & New Plymouth areas, one of only 29 officers and men from Cordelia to earn the New Zealand medal.
Robert Carron was invalided from Cordelia in May 1861 and subsequently joined Cambridge (May to Nov 1861), Satellite (Nov to Dec 1861), Indus (Dec 1861 to Oct 1862), Phoebe (Oct 1862 to Nov 1867), Impregnable (Nov to Dec 1867), and Indus (Dec 1867 to Jun 1871). He was not entitled to the LS&GC medal and took his pension to shore on 18 Jul 1871.
