George Weller enlisted underage into the Rifle Brigade numbered 3947. After training he went to the Crimea War with the 2nd Battalion landing on 25th June 1854 and fought at Alma, Inkermann and Sebastopol. On 1st Sep 1855 he was wounded in action taking a bullet to the head causing a wound to his scalp. The war diary notes a party of soldiers of the 2nd battalion were ordered to cover a sap which was in the course of being constructed. The Russians had erected a screen of stones 80 yards in front to protect their sentries. The party of soldiers from the 2nd battalion led by Lt Cary split into two and rushed the Russian sentries causing them to abandon the stone screen and retire to a ditch for protection. During the night the Russians attacked the position given up causing 1 soldier killed and 15 wounded including George.
They came back to Aldershot by Nov 1856 and then he transferred to the 1/60th Rifles on 28th Feb 1857 and was renumbered 3528. He arrived in India on 25th Nov 1857 to join the regiment at Meerut. The regiment goes back to England in 1860 but George transfers back to the 2nd Rifle Brigade and stays in India. He is renumbered to 993 and on 3rd Feb 1865 he returns to England and is discharge on 24th June 1865.
He re-engages on 26th July 1866 with the Army Hospital Corps numbered 1661 as a Lance Sgt leaving on 25th Oct 1875 after 21 years service.
