John Merrifield born about 1823 enlisted into the Royal Navy on 8th Feb 1842 as a Boy 2nd Class on HMS Agincourt, made Boy 1st Class 28th Mar 1842, Ordinary Seaman 1st Apr 1844 and Able Seaman 3rd Oct 1844. He left Agincourt on 6 Sep 1847 to go aboard HMS Liniet? till 18th Feb 1851. Next HMS Arethusa from 19th Feb 1851 to 15 Jan 1855 where he earned his Crimea Medal with clasp Sebastopol. HMS Cressy was next from 16th Jan 1855 as a Coxain Barge till 24th May 1856 where he earned his Baltic Medal. He left the Navy and joined the Coast Guards till 11th July 1869 with a total of 25 years and 314 days service.
