Crimea Medal clasp Sebastopol officially impressed naming CAPT C B ROCHE 34TH REGT, Indian Mutiny no clasp named PAYMR C B ROCHE 34TH REGT & Turkish Crimea Sardinian issue, unnamed as issued but has been plugged and fitted with a Crimea-style suspension. Medals have light contact marks but very fine.
Charles Boyse Roche was born in Ramsgate, Kent, on 16th Oct 1805 and served as a Volunteer from Dec 1826 until being commissioned an Ensign in the 45th Regiment of Foot on 18th Jan 1828. He was promoted Lieutenant on 21st Jun 1832, and was appointed Paymaster of the 34th Regiment of Foot on 30th Nov 1838. He served with the Regiment in the Crimea from 9th Dec 1854, and then in India from 7th Aug 1857, being present during the Great Sepoy Mutiny at Cawnpore during the actions of 26th-28th Nov 1857. Promoted Major on 1st Jan 1860, he transferred to the Half Pay List with the rank of Lt-Col on 15th Oct 1870, and finally retired on 18th Jan 1881, aged 76. he died in Bathwich, Somerset, on 10th May 1883.
