James Silcox came from Beaufort, Breckonshire and was a Collier in a local mine. At age 34 he joined the 5th South Wales Borders numbered 5-14489 on 2nd Sept 1914. He was quickly promoted in the UK to Cpl in April 1915. On 17th July 1915 he landed in France with the battalion and was made a L/Sgt in Dec 1915. He was awarded a DCM LG 2nd June 1916: - For Conspicuous good work and devotion to duty. He has always chosen the most dangerous tasks and done them well.
He stayed inFrance till 14thMarc 1918 when he was shipped back wounded on the 1st March 1918 in an accident to his hands. The injuries proved to be serious enough and he was discharged from the Army on 17th july 1918 and received a Silver War Badge.
