WW1 Distinguished Conduct Medal named 7065 PTE G BURGESS 1/S W BORD.
George Burgess enlisted into the 1st South Wales Borderers numbered 7065 and landed in France on 13th Aug 1914. He was awarded a DCM LG 28th Mar 1918 for his actions between 10/11th Nov 1917 when the battalion started from Allour Farm (Battle of Cambrai). The casualties were heavy 10 officers & 372 other ranks killed or wounded.
His citation reads - For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Although himself wounded, he continued to bring in wounded under very heavy fire for four hours, at the end of which time he was in a state of collapse.
He transferred to the Army Service Corps numbered M/41174 on 14th April 1918.
