Samuel Sweetman born 5th Oct 1863 in Bayford, Somerset and enlisted into the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class numbered 109860 on 8th Sep 1879 as a 16 year old labourer. He started training on the training ship for boys HMS St Vincent, Duke of Wellington & Warrio. He first ship was HMS Hercules from 1st May 1887 to 29th Apr 1882, then Hecla from 26th May 1882 to 30th Sep 1885 by now an Able Seaman and served in Egypt for his medals. HMS Asia 1886/87, HMS Imperieuse 1888/91, HMS Serapis 1891/92, Australia 1893/94, Morgdala 1894/96. He next went on courses till joining HMS Sovereign 1899/1902 and left for pension on 17th May 1902. Not entitled to a LS&GC as spent time in cells. He joined the RFR numbered A535 till 14th Sep 1905 - he served 3 years penal servitude.
