Indian General Service Medal clasp Bhootan impressed naming LIEUT J R MCCULLAGH ROYAL ENGRS.
James Robert McCullagh born 25th Mar 1842 in Kingstown, Dublin and enlisted into the Royal Engineers on 18th Dec 1861 as a Lt. He is sent to India to work in the Public Works Department where he earns the Indian Service Medal clasp Bhootan. Made a Major in 1881, a Lt Col 1888 and Colonel in 1893 and retires in 1895. He dies aged 72 in Isleworth in 1914.
There was a VC action with the Royal Engineers in Bhootan during an attack on the Block-house at Dewan-Gerir in Bhootan on 30th Apr 1865 for Capt Spottiswoode and Lt Dundas Royal Engineers.
