      Description:

      Indian General Service Medal Jowaki 1877-8 script naming SOWAR JARDAR SINGH 5TH PUNJAB CAVY. On edge bruising and word CAVY, the V is very worn.


      On 22nd Dec 1877 60 Sabres of the regiment under Captain Carr left for Kohat under Major Williams. On 2nd Jan 1878 the regiment took over from the 2nd Punjab Cavalry in outposts in Jowaki. On 8th Mar 1878 the regiment were withdrawn to HQ. On 7th Oct 1878 part of regiment went to Cabul Frontier, arriving on 13th. New Snider Cabre issued to regiment. Detached parties sent to Koorum River, Ahmed-i-Shamoo, Hajir Pir Jullamaie and Esaor to establish posts. Another party sent to Hazir Pit. On 21st Nov 1878 the regiment taken on the strength of Koorum Column and crossed the Frontier. On 7th Jan 1879 the Mungals were assembling a force at the western end of the valley of the village of Matun. The column attacked and drove them into the hills, a sabre of the 5th Punjab Cavalry lost their life and 7 wounded. The Column was withdrawn after it had cooled down and the regiment was mainly now stationed at Thull, with one Wing in Kohat by 5th June 1879. On 10th June they were withdrawn from the Kuram Field Force and all went to Kohat.
