      The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion, CMG, neck badge, silver, gilt and enamels, these housed in its original fitted presentation case by Garrard & Co ‘to the King’. Queens South Africa Medal clasp Cape Colony & Kings South Africa Medal clasps South Africa 1901 & 1902 both named 1249 S SERJT S EALES SAMIF, 1935 Jubilee Medal & 1937 Coronation Medal all unnamed as issued with named boxes of issue.

      Shirley Eales born 8th Oct 1883 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, the Son of Reverend George Eales, a baptist minister. Shirley and family emigrated to South Africa in 1886. At the age of 16 he joined the South African Light Horse, a unit in the South African Irregular Forces numbered 1249 and served in the Boer War, earning himself the QSA clasp Cape Colony & KSA clasps South Africa 1901 & 1902 by then the Quartermaster Sgt. He left service in 1902 and was employed by Viscount Milner, High Commissioner for South Africa as a junior member. Between 1902 to 1932 he was employed as part of the administrative staff of the British High Commission for South Africa. He was awarded the OBE LG 5th Jan 1923 as Chief Clerk in office for the High Commissioner for South Africa. Awarded the CBE LG 4th June 1928 as Assistant Imperial Secretary for the High Commissioner for South Africa. He was made Imperial Secretary in Nov 1931.


      In 1932 the title became obsolete and he was appointed Administrative Secretary to the South African High Commission on 1st Apr 1932. In Sep of that year, he was transferred to the High Commissioner overseeing the British Protectorates under the famous Vice-Admiral E R G R Evans of Antarctic fame. In 1934 made a Member of the Railway Commission of South Africa for the Bechuanaland Protectorate. In the Birthday Honours LG 1st Jan 1935 he was awarded the CMG (Companion of the Order of St Michael & St George) for his role in defusing the risk of war between Tshekedi Kharma, the regent of the 60,000 strong Bangwato (Bamangwato) tribe and the then British Resident Commissioner stationed in Mafeking, Colonel Rey over the McIntosh Affair. He received the 1935 Jubilee Medal and in 1936 made Deputy Chairman of the Railway Commission of South Africa for the Bechuanaland Protectorate. In 1936 Member of the Bechuanaland Protectorate and Deputy Chairman of the Rhodesia Railway Commission, and in 1937 awarded the 1937 Coronation Medal. Shirley eventually retired in 1949 to Cape Town and died in Fish Hoek, Cape Town in 1964 at the age of 81.
