John George Oakey born 1877 in Oxford was a 18 year old stableman when he enlisted into the 2nd East Yorkshire Regiment numbered 5049 on 11th Feb 1895. He had previous service with the 3rd Battalion Middlesex Regt. After training he was sent to South Africa on 14th Mar 1900 till 2nd Jan 1903 earning him the QSA with clasps Wittenburg, Cape Colony & Transvaal as well as the KSA South Africa 1901 & 1902. He went to Army Reserves as soon as he returned to the UK on 3rd Jan 1903 till 10th Feb 1907, totalling 12 years service.
