      WW1 Military Cross privately named on back CAPTAIN A W DUNTON MG CORPS LG 18 3 1918, British War & Victory Medals named CAPT A W DUNTON.


      Albert William Dunton born 10th Aug 1885 joined the Civil Service Commission becoming a clerk second division in the India Office LG 31 Jul 1903 till Dec 1914 when he was sent on military service. He joins the Machine Gun Corps Infantry as a temporary 2nd Lt on 25th Oct 1915. His medal index card shows service in France, Belgium and Mesopotamia. He is awarded an Military Cross LG 18th Mar 1918 - For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He made several reconnaissances in a heavily shelled area before the attack, and showed great devotion to duty in keeping his guns in action under very heavy shell fire, and attending to the wounded, although he was severely shaken by the explosion of a shell. He left the army on 9th July 1919 by then a Captain.

      In 1919 he went back to the Civil Service and became the Chief Executive Officer of the India office, being awarded an OBE Civil Division LG 1st Jan 1938.
