WW1 Military Cross in original cross unnamed as issued, British War & Victory Medals named QM & CAPT S H ASKEW & Silver Army Temperance Association Medal 1897 for India not named.
Samuel Henry Askew was a Sgt Major in the Monmouthshire TF. He was born in 1870 and was in India in 1911 as noted by a census. His regimental number was 2676 and I am assuming he was in the 2nd Battalion at Pontypool. When war broke out he was a 2nd Lt in the 2nd Battalion and was made a Quarter Master in Aug 1915 and later a QM & Captain. He landed in France on 6th Jan 1916. Sometime he was attached to the Warwickshire Regiment.
He was awarded a Military Cross with Monmouthshire Regiment in the London Gazette 18th July 1918 - For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. It was solely due to his determination that ammunition and rations were delivered to the battalion. He led his pack mules through heavy shell fire on several occasions and rendered most valuable service to the battalion.
On returned to the Pontypool barracks he carried the colours in 1919 (photo enclosed).
