Arthur (Randell) Pendrill Charles was born on 10th June 1898 in Neath, Glamorgan to Rhys & Margaret Charles. His mother died in 1909 when he was only 11 years old in Llansamlet, Glamorgan so they moved to London and he went to Kings College. When WW1 started he enlisted into the army and attended the Royal Military College gaining a commission in the Royal Fusiliers on 1st May 1917.
He was sent to France and was awarded a Military Cross LG 26th July 1918 - For conspicuous gallant and devotion to duty. This officer led his platoon through a heavy barrage, directing each section to it place as it came up and during the day moved up and down the line, controlling the fire and staving off repeated attacks. A week later, he made a daring reconnaissance of lines of shell holes to be occupied.
He is also noted as being wounded in action in June 1918 and survived the war. He was made a Lt on 1st Nov 1918 and army life suited him as he went out to Iraq with the regiment after WW1 was over. He resigned his commission on account of ill health on 27th Feb 1924 and died on 4th April 1939 aged only 40 years old in Wangford, Suffolk.
