William Matthew Shewan was from Peterhead, Aberdeen. He was the Son of Robert J Shewan the local Tanner. William before the war worked as a plumber with Mr John Ferguson of Peterhead, Aberdeen. He enlisted into the 5th Gordon Highlanders TF on 24th April 1914 numbered 1830 and landed in France with them on 5th Dec 1915. Sometime later he transferred to the 51st Battalion Manchine Gun Corps numbered 20188 and won the Military Medal LG 23rd July 1919 for actions between Oct & Nov 1918.
The group comes with a lovely original photo of the MGC company he was in, original copies of protection certificate, MM form for medal, demob form, certificate of employment, MM postal envelope addressed to him at 6 Uger Street, Peterhead, Aberdeen & three newspaper cutting one about him winning the MM.
