William McKenzie Mitchelson born in Inverness and living in Parkshaw enlisted into the 9th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment numbered 16575 on 17th Sep 1914 before transferring to the 2nd Gordon Highlanders numbered S/10293. He landed with the Gordon Highlanders in France on 6th July 1915 and then sent home on 20th July 1916. He transferred to the 3rd Reserve Battalion on 11th Aug 1916 and then to the 114th Coy Labour Corps numbered 318776 as fitness fell. Sent back to France on 24th Mar 1917 with the Labour Corps, he transferred to the 10th Kings Own Scottish Borderers numbered 46760 and won the MM & French Croix du Guerre during the Battle of Amiens in Aug 1918. He transferred to the Scottish Rifles numbered 62926 now a Lance Sgt on 11th Jan 1919 and left the army on 27th Feb 1919. He rejoined the Army on 12th Apr 1921 to 5th July 1921 on a 90 emergency recall with the 4th Buffs Defence Force numbered 4b/391 when he living in Folkstone.
