James Alexander Laing born 15th Jun 1827 in Woolwich, Kent and entered the Royal Navy aged 17 years old as a Private in the 84th Coy Royal Marines on 22nd May 1847 with his civilian trade as Carpenter. He was on the books of HMS Champion 12th Feb 1848 to 9th Jan 1852, HMS Polyphemus 27th Feb 1852 to 23rd Sep 1854 and HMS Endymion till 12th July 1857.
He joined the Navy again on 31st July 1857 as a Caulkers Mate on HMS Chesapeake
