New Zealand Medal 1863-65 on back named 487 THOS CARTER 70TH REGT.
Thomas Carter born in 1837 was a shoemaker in Leek, Staffordshire enlisted into the army on 3rd June 1858 as a Pte in the 70th Foot numbered 487. After training he was sent to India for 3 years and then to New Zealand for nearly 4 years. He served 16 years until he was discharged unfit for service in Feb 1874.
He was on field duty in the Waikato, Taranaki and Wanganui districts until July 1865. The regiment returned to England in January 1866.
