Richard Elliss was born at Bratton Clovelly, Tavistock, Devon, and attested for the Royal Marines at Plymouth on 12th Feb 1834. He served in HMS Princess Charlotte during the operations on and off the coast of Syria in 1840, and was discharged at his own request, on payment of £20, on 23rd Aug 1841.
