Vernon Alexander Spink born 28th June 1891, educated at St Marks School, Silvertown & Central Secondary School, West Ham. He enlisted into the 3/5th London Regt numbered 1885 on 20th Apr 1914 and served at home and went on to become a Sgt. In Aug 1915 he was appointed a 2nd Lt in the Cheshire Regt. He landed in France in Apr 1916 with the 6th Battalion but on the 10th July 1916 at Givenchy in the village line trenches they were reinforcing the defences when they were bombarded. On the 11st July 1916 Lt Spink was admitted to hospital with Shell Shock and Enteritis. He was sent back to the UK to get better. He was still in the UK in Apr 1917. He relinquished his army career on 6th Mar 1919 as a Captain 22nd London Regt, attd Cheshire Regt.
Vernon survived the war and went back to his job with the Inland Revenue. On 1st Jan 1951 he was awarded an OBE as Assistant Chief Inspector, Immigration Branch, Home Office.
