Charles Goodrich Carter born 1881 in Mortimer, Berkshire was the Son of Colonel James Colebrooke Carter ex Royal Berkshire Regiment and land agent to Lord & Lady Wantage. He joined the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment) as a 2nd Lt on 14th Dec 1898. He went out to South Africa to fight the Boers in Feb 1900 attached to the Worcestershire Regiment and served for a while before being invalid home. After recuperating he went back out in April 1901 with the Manchester Regiment according to a newspaper report in the Reading Mercury. He was a Lt in K Coy Berkshire Volunteers and the Oxfordshire Light Infantry.
He relinquished his commission in the Volunteer Battalion and became a Lt in the Army and then a Captain in the 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regt TA in April 1909.. He is noted as a Land Agent like his father in 1921.
