James Samuel Parsons born in 1875 in St Mary Major, Exeter, Devon was a 20 year old labourer when he joined the 4th Battalion Devonshire Regt numbered 3090. He was called up for permanent service with the Devonshire Regt numbered 6051 on 7th Mar 1900 and sent to South Africa for the Boer War with the 1st & 2nd Battalions on 17th Mar 1900 till 12th May 1902 earning a QSA 2 clasp and a KSA 2 clasp. He was discharged on 26th May 1902.
