Herbert Rapley born 1876 in Marylebone, Middlesex enlisted into the The Queens (West Surrey) Regiment numbered 4596 on 18th Oct 1894. He was the servant to the Lt Colonel and after training was sent to South Africa on 20th Oct 1899 earning the QSA 2 clasps. He was sent back to the UK on 6th Aug 1900. Discharged to the Army Reserves on 14th Oct 1906 after 12 years service.
