      Description:

      WW1 Military Medal named 111527 PTE-LCPL J BUCHANAN 5/TANK C.

John Young Scott Buchanan from Baillieston, Glasgow enlisted into the 5th Tank Corps numbered 111527. He served in France and was awarded an MM & French Medaillie d'Honneur avec Glaives en Bronze on 8th Aug 1918 at the Battle of Amiens. Near Dodo Wood, Aug 8th Aug, L/Cpl Buchanan displayed the greatest gallantry. His tank received a direct hit which set it on fire, wounded the tank commander and killed three of the crew. L/Cpl Buchanan and Pte Hall (both members of the crew) entered the blazing tank and succeeded in rescuing the tank commander and the remaining member of the crew, both of whom were wounded. They then got both officer and man safely away. In addition to the danger they incurred through ammunition exploding inside the tank, they were exposed to the enemy's fire throughout. In the French citation it mentions the tank was hit twice when working with the 42nd French Division.
