William Stone born in Portland, Dorset around 1857 enlisted in Weymouth into the Royal Engineers numbered 13558. After training he was sent to Malta in Oct 1877 till Jan 1879 when sent home, out to South Africa in Feb 1879 till Jan 1890 when sent home and stayed there till May 1897 when discharged due to being unfit to serve after 21 years service. Awarded his LS&GC medal in 1894 with gratuity. In South Africa he served with 30th Company.
