Raised in Graaff-Reinet and Somerset East districts by Commandant B. E. Bowker for the Ninth War of 1877. 85 Medals issued to this unit, 47 of which with the '1877-8' clasp. The unit also earned some 34 of a total of all the 167 rare '1877' clasps - for the operations from September 1877. Also served alongside a relative, Trooper M. Mattig. Confirmed on rolls.
