Sir Alexander George Gray born 1st Mar 1884, the Son of Alexander George Gray of Edinburgh and Macclesfield. Educated at Macclesfield Grammar School, he followed his father into banking joining Westminster Bank at Knott Mill, Manchester. In 1905 he went to India an joined the Alliance Bank of Simla and then 1908 Bank of India. He rose through the ranks to become General Manager, Bombay, Vice President of the Indian Institute of Bankers and then Sheriff of Bombay in 1937. He retired in 1943 and came back to the UK becoming Chairman of the Executive Council of Berkshire National Heath Service, Church Warden at Ashamstead and Chairman of Bradfield Rural District Council. He died on 26th Oct 1968.
During WW1 he served as a trooper in the 4th Bombay Light Horse, India Defence Force. Awarded a Knighthood in 1941, Cross of Polonia Restituta in 1945 for Polish Relief in India and 1953 Coronation Medal as Chairman of Berkshire Executive Council.
An article in India about a police raid on Congress House where several leaders were arrested. It suggested that Sir Gray took part as a member of the Bombay Light Horse so they had to close his bank for awhile due to riots over the raid.
