Victorian Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal engraved naming 1713 CORPL J POPE NORTHD FUS.
John Pope born in 1849 in Borderstead, Norfolk and was an 18 year old tinsmith when he enlisted into the 1/5th Foot Northumberland Fusiliers numbered 1713 on 17th Apr 1867. After training he was sent to India on 7th Nov 1867, landing there on 21st Mar 1868 and served in the Afghanistan wars earning the Afghanistan Medal no clasp. He landed back in UK on 30th Dec 1880 and transferred to the 4th Durham Light Infantry as a Sgt on 22nd Sep 1886 till 15th Feb 1892 when he retired after nearly 25 years service. Awarded the LS&GC medal and £5 gratuity in 1884.
