Victory Medal named 17482 PTE J H SMITH W YORK R.
John Henry Smith, son of Patrick & late Elizabeth Smith of 22 Eden Street, West Hartlepool enlisted into the 9th West Yorkshire Regiment numbered 17482. After training he was sent to Gallipoli landing on 11th July 1915. John was probably wounded in the fighting on 8th Aug onwards as he was taken off the peninsula and sent to Alexandria ending up in the Bombay Presidency General Hospital where he died of his wounds on 31st Aug 1915 aged 23 years old. He is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military & War Cemetery.
