      WW1 1914/15 Star, British War & Victory Medals all named 232680 W J PARKES AB RN.


      Herbert John Parkes born 28th April 1888 in Solihull, Warwickshire and was a 18 year old errand boy when he enlisted into the Royal Navy numbered 232680 on 23rd Apr 1906. During WW1 he was on HMS Albion from 30th Jul 1914 to 18th May 1916, she was a Canopus Class pre-dreadnought battleship she took part in the German South West Africa campaign, then onto to Dardanelles campaigns where she attacked Ottoman Forts and took repeated hits, supported the beach landings at V beach, Cape Helles. When attacking the Krithia she received significant damage from Turkish shore batteries and had to retire. He joined HMS Prince on 15th Sep 1916 to 14th Sep 1917, then HMS Shannon till 6th Mar 1919.
