WW1 BWM Pte Hales KIA 27/9/1918 11th Tank Corps

    WW1 British War Medal named 96923 PTE E J HALES TANK CORPS.

    Edwin John Hales born in Leyton, Essex and enlisted into the 26th Battalion Training Reserve numbered 6561 before transferring to the 11th Tank Corps numbered 96923. On 27th Sept 1918 14 tanks of 11th Tank Corps were sent into action at Havrincourt Wood & Beauchamp Ridge. The enemy had observed the tanks starting and a shelled the area heavily. The action saw 8 tanks hit by direct artillery fire but great damage was done to the enemy and machine guns. During the fighting the Germans fought extremely well, even trying to pull the machine guns and 6 pounders out of the tanks in battle.

    Sadly on the 27th Sept 1918 Edwin was killed in action and is remembered on the GOUZEAUCOURT NEW BRITISH CEMETERY.
