WW1 British War Medal named 40520 PTE J MC KINNON K O SCO BORD.
John McKinnon born in Caldercruix, Lanark but living in Broxburn, Linlithgow enlisted into the Royal Scots numbered 4536 and then transferred to the 1st Kings Own Scottish Borderers numbered 40520. On the 30th Nov 1917 the regiment was in Marcoing when they received new the enemy had broken through and they were quickly formed to provide a defence line on the right flank. Once the situation was stablised they advance to enemy fire near the hill and then order a counter attack to drive the enemy back. This was successful but with the loss of 3 officers and 11 other ranks killed, 4 officers and 79 other ranks wounded and 1 officer and 40 other ranks missing. Sadly on this day John was killed in action and is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial.
