      WW1 Military Cross unnamed as issued, 1914/15 Star named CAPT J N PRIOR RE, British War & Victory Medals named CAPT J N PRIOR.

      John Nelson Prior born 20th Oct 1874 lived in Edenbridge, Kent and was a Sanitary Inspector & Surveyor for the Sevenoaks Council. He had previous military service between 1899-1893 in the 1st Volunteer Royal Fusiliers. In June 1915 he applied for a commission aged 40 years old in the Royal Engineers and was granted it. He was appointed temporary Captain in the Royal Engineers on 23 August 1915, and served during the Great War on the Western Front from 21 September 1915.

      In Jan 1918 he was Officer in Charge of 58th Artisan Works Company Royal Engineers. They built huts and roads and later after the war became a chemical defence/weapons arm 58th (Porton Down) Company RE. He was awarded an MC in the 1st Jan 1917 LG and left service in Feb 1919.
