Barnford Theobald Foss was born in Croydon, Surrey on 8th Jul 1895 and was commissioned 2nd Lt in the Middlesex Regiment. He served with the 23rd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 1st Sep 1917 and was captured and taken Prisoner of War at Biefvillers on 25th Mar 1918. According to British and German records, he was reported as missing in action some two days earlier and at the time of capture was suffering from a wound to the neck. He was later incarcerated at Minden Camp and repatriated on 29th Nov 1918. His MC was published on 1st Jan 1918.
Foss later returned to service with the Middlesex Regiment during the Second World War. Appointed to a temporary short service commission as Lt 27th Apr 1939, with the honorary rank of Staff Captain, he later transferred to a permanent commission as Lt on 27 April 1942. He died in 1971 in Uckfield, Sussex.
