James Lochead Dickson living in Glasgow enlisted into the Army Service Corps Motor Transport numbered M2/466276 on 27th Dec 1916 but was quickly transferred to the Machine Gun Corps Heavy Section E Battalion numbered 91643. After training he was sent to France as a driver of a tank with E Battalion on 25th June 1917. E battalion eventually became 5th Battalion Tank Corps.
On 8th Aug 1918, this soldier was acting as first driver of the tank commanded by 2nd Lt Birch. This tank engaged a hostile field battery at close range. Pte Dickson was wounded early in the engagement, but continued to drive his tank, which he manoeuvred with such skill that one gun of the battery was knocked out and many of the gunners killed or wounded before the tank received two direct hits which put it out of action. His courage and coolness on this occasion were worthy of the highest praise.
He was sent back to the UK and became a Acting Sgt in 23rd Battalion at Bovington till he was discharged on 12th Jan 1919.
